Counselling FAQs

What happens in the first session?
We’ll take some time to talk about what’s brought you to counselling and what you’d like support with. I’ll also go over how I work, confidentiality, and answer any questions. There’s no pressure to share everything straight away — it’s a gentle starting point.

How many sessions will I need?
There’s no set number. Some people come for a few sessions, others for longer-term support. As a guide, 6–12 sessions can be a good starting point for exploring specific or short-term issues. More complex or long-standing concerns may need longer-term work — sometimes continuing for a year or more. We’ll check in regularly to see how it’s going and what feels right for you.

Will you give me advice?
Not in the traditional sense — but I may offer tools, strategies or perspectives to support you, such as grounding techniques, self-reflection practices, or ideas from compassion-focused or CBT-based approaches. We’ll work together to find what’s most helpful for you.

What if I get emotional or upset?
That’s okay. Counselling can bring up strong feelings, and part of the work is making space for those emotions in a way that feels safe and manageable. We’ll go at your pace.

Is everything confidential?
Yes — what you share stays between us. The only exceptions are rare and explained clearly at the start: if there's a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or if I’m legally required to share information. More detail is in my Counselling Policies.

Can I stop any time?
Yes, you have the right to end therapy whenever you feel it's the right decision for you. While you can stop at any time, discussing your decision with me can help with closure and potentially address any lingering concerns or emotional impact. I’ll support you through the ending process and help you prepare for the next steps, should you wish to.

Do you offer online or face-to-face sessions?
Yes, I offer both. You can choose whichever feels most comfortable or works best with your routine.

How do I book?
You can click the link at the bottom of the page or book online through the link on my Counselling page — just pick a day and time that suits you.

How do I pay?
Counselling sessions are paid for in advance. Payment details will be provided when you book your first session.

What if I need to cancel?
Please try to give at least 24 hours’ notice so your space can be offered to someone else. If less than 24 hours’ notice is given, the full fee may still apply. This is all covered in my Counselling Policies.
